ReCall: You Can't Stop the Music

The "music" being disco and yes they could stop it apparently. This film gem, starring the Village People, was unfortunately released as the 70's dance music craze was dying a painful death. It's campy, stilted, and everyone in it is so gosh darn perky about putting together the musical act it makes you want to get in touch with their dealer. It's so bad (so bad that it was the recipient of the very first Razzie Award) that it is deliriously good. There are several musical vignettes -- the best of course being the YMCA number, complete with wrestling, gymnastics, and aerobicizing.
The movie was produced by Alan Carr (Grease), "introduces" Bruce Jenner as an actor and features a (very) young Steve Guttenberg as roller skating musical composer Jack Morrell.

It als features the memorable lines:

Housework is like bad sex. Every time I do it I swear I will never do it again. Until the next time company comes.

Leathermen don't get nervous.

Lulu: Oh, the Indian is hot. I go for exotic types, especially when they're half-naked.
Samantha: Lulu!
Lulu: You tell him I'll make up for all the indignities they suffered in "Roots."

One of the worst aspects of the movie, in hindsight, is their enduring optimism for the 80's. Everyone was so convinced it was going to be their time. Like Samantha says "The 70s are dead and gone. The 80s are going to be something wonderfully new and different, and so am I. "
Yeah, that didn't work out so well.

The movie is the perfect guilty pleasure. Don't believe us, watch the opening scene of Guttenberg rollerskating through New York City. Then rent the DVD. We dare you.
