411: Escape to Governors Island
OperatorNYC is always on the lookout for a refuge from the urban jungle. Fridays and Saturdays through September, Governors Island is just a free ferry ride away. The island was used by the military until the 1960's, when it was transferred to the Coast Guard. Ownership of the island was transferred to New York in 2003.
According to the website:
On Fridays and Saturdays, visitors to Governors Island will also have access to most of the National Historic District for self-touring (self-touring guides will be available for free at the visitors center on Governors Island). Areas for self-touring include the historic Parade Grounds, for picnicking and recreation; the western Esplanade, which offers some of the most dramatic views of New York Harbor, from the Statue of Liberty up towards the Brooklyn Bridge; and the Colonels’ Row triangle, a park area between the mansions of Colonels’ Row and the majestic Liggett Hall, which offers a wonderful, tree-lined respite from the hustle and bustle of city living.
Sounds good to us. In addition, a number of readings, concerts and other activities are scheduled for Saturdays.
