Callsheet: BVD on DVD

Sex! Drugs! Rock 'n' Roll! The cult classic is finally on DVD and it freaks us out! Not a sequel (as the opening credits clearly state) to Jacqueline Susann's Valley of the Dolls, this rock musical/campfest/morality tale is the story of the meteoric rise and tragic freefall of the all-girl band the Carrie Nations. The girls taste all the tragic excesses of the L.A. music scene, courtesy of svengali Ronnie "Z-Man" Barzell.

Produced and directed by auteur and titty freak Russ Meyer, with a screenplay by Roger Ebert(!), the film is an embarrassment of quotable riches. The most famous is "This is my happening and it freaks me out!" But who could forget these other polished gems:
-in a scene like this you get a contact-high!
-you're a groovy boy. I'd like to strap you on sometime.
-You will drink the black sperm of my vengeance.
- I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to learn that all four of them habitually smoked marijuana cigarettes... reefers.

20th Century Fox had hired indie director Meyer to save the studio, and they believe BVD was the film to do it. Eh, not so much. But it has become a classic, and is made for repeat viewing. The 2-disc DVD set is crammed with extras, including cast interviews and commentary by the imminent Roger Ebert himself.

And the music! The soundtrack by Stu Phillips is filled with songs that still rock to this day. Don't forget the guest appearance by the Strawberry Alarm Clock.

We love BVD so much we're off to form our Carrie Nations cover band right now!
