911: The Apocalypse is Coming Tomorrow, Look Busy

In order to gin up the idea of regime change in Iran, a handful of neoconservative, doomsaying nutjobs (who are pretty much synonymous with the Republican Party at this point) are trying to foist the idea upon us that the apocalypse begins August 22nd. Basing their completely wackjob logic on the belief of some Shiite sects that tomorrow could be the day the earth goes kablooey, these hawks make the unnatural leap of logic that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is going to bring about the end days.

We've been on apocalypse watch so long that we've got doomsday fatigue. Just bring it already. Besides, we checked the rapture-ometer (or whatever that chart is) and we're actually down two points from total annihilation. Sorry neocons, no judgment day for you. Yet.

Don't paint with too broad a brush. I am a Christian, and I don't think the end of days starts tomorrow. (Being an amillenialist, I think the last days started way back after Jesus ascended into heaven. Logically speaking, if one believes that time is linear and has a sure beginning and a sure ending for the human race, then we have always been in the last days. But this is neither here nor there.) But it is a reasonable possibility, using hisory as a guide, that Iran will do something tomorrow (or maybe tonight, given the vagaries of time zones) that will make the world a different place than it was today. Probably not Armageddon, but maybe a kind of 21st-century Pearl Harbor. And if a state is willing to do something like a Pearl Harbor, then they should be stopped by other states that would rather not let that happen on a regular occasion. If something does happen on August 22nd, I'll be coming back to see what you have to say about it, if I can. And if nothing happens, then I will cede the point that a lot of people did a lot of needless extrapolation and silly speculation.

Best Regards.
