411: Elvira

'Tis the season, and by that we mean the season where ladies get dressed up as slutty ghosts, slutty pirates, or slutty taxidermists and hit the bars on All Hallow's Eve. As such, we thought we'd pass on an interview in HX Magazine with the patron saint of the slutty/spooky costume, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Elvira (nee Cassandra Peterson) talks about her new series of DVDs, her reality TV foray, and her drag queen assistant.

HX: First, and most importantly, thanks for being my MySpace friend.
Cassandra Peterson: Oh thanks! I have a great assistant, Christian Greenia, who handles that. He’s also my drag queen. He makes a living going around being Elvira - and he looks incredible.

So why is Elvira’s Movie Macabre only now coming to DVD?
It’s complicated. I own all the wraparounds from the TV show, and I have them in a refrigerated vault so they don’t crumble. We’ve tried for years to bring them out on DVD - but I don’t own the movies. When I was doing the show, they were basically giving away the movies. But not so now. The big studios own them and the fees they charge for usage are just insane. And it’s all about finding copies that are decent enough for DVD. So I feel like an archaeologist digging up these old movies.

Is there one of these flicks that’s your favorite?
Werewolf of Washington. Or maybe Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks. It’s got more lesbian sex than some porn movies! I mean, they all have some lesbian overtones. A lesbian scene is de rigeur in these old horror films.
