411: "I'm Batman...Gurl!"

We've always thought that Batman, the brooding caped crusader, was a little...light in the batboots, but we never had any conclusive proof until we came across these panels, courtesy of Dial B for Blog. We think they speak for themselves. What are the odds that these in some way inspired director Joel Schumacher's insipid S&M-lite Batman & Robin.

Though we're joking about Batman's sexuality (um, sort of) Frederick Wertham was convinced there was some man-boy love going on in the batcave. As author of 1954 tome Seduction of the Innocent, Wertham argued that comics were corrupting the youth of America with violence and sexual deviance. It's because of his shit-stirring that Congress launched an investigation into the comic book industry and the Comics Code Authority was established.

Ol' Wertham would probably have a coronary if he were around to see the preponderance of gay superheros today, not to mention all the books that do deal with violence, drugs, and sex in a very vivid and intelligent manner.

Now, about those Wonder Woman lesbian rumors...
