Call Sheet: Inside the Shortbus Studio

Now that Shortbus is about to Open (Oct. 4th), auteur John Cameron Mitchell is sharing the trials and tribulations of making a movie with real sex.

"At first, the guys were all 'no prob', but once we got on set, the women were zen and the guys were like: 'Where's the Viagra?' Once the actors took their pills way too too early. Later we had to digitally remove the red from their faces. Another time, an actor came unexpectedly--all over my shoe.

Besides geting an unexpected shoe polish, Mitchell took one for the homo team by dining on the other white meat:

"For my Hitchcock cameo I decided to do something I had never done. I ate me some pussy. It didn't get me hard but it was better than craft service."

And what's the overall message:

"Nowadays kids are learning about sex from porn, and it’s a strange, skewed way to learn about sex because it’s connected to consumerism, to commercialism, to credit cards. Young people seem to approach sex from a niche-marketing point of view: ‘I’m a top,’ ‘I’m a bottom,’ ‘I’m a twink,’ ‘I’m a daddy,’ ‘I’m barely legal,’ ‘I’m shopping,’ ‘I’m selling,’ ‘I’m not enjoying this and I’m not respecting anybody in the process.’ Why not explore sex in an American film in a context that can be, I hope, amusing and thoughtful?'"
